ALPHONSE MUCHA (1866-1939) [FEMALE STUDY.] Pencil drawing. Circa 1900.
161/2x131/4 inches.
Condition B+: oval time stain around image. Card.
This drawing was clearly made in Mucha's studio on the Rue du Val Grace. The location is identifiable by the armchair on which the model is leaning, which can be seen in period photographs of Mucha's studio (see Rennert/Weill p. 21). In order to keep his images fresh and innovative, Mucha had to constantly explore new angles and perspectives of representation, no matter how physically improbable. The way this girl is depicted leaning backwards is certainly not very natural or comfortable, but it corresponds to the pose struck by the Dancer in Mucha's series of the The Arts (see lot 117). Mucha would make endless sketches before he composed a final image, and this drawing, with its precise of line, meticulous detail and graceful sense of movement, was likely one of the preparations he did for The Arts
